New conductive coating offers potential in creation of flexible electronics

A robust new type of conductive coating has been developed that could aid the future production of stretchable, bendable and foldable electronics.

Researchers from the college of engineering at Texas A&M University have created a surface-agnostic coating that offers considerable mechanical strength and can maintain performance under heavy stretching and bending.

To achieve this, sequential adsorption of negatively-charged two-dimensional metal carbide sheets and positively charged polyelectrolytes was carried out using an aqueous assembly process known as layer-by-layer assembly.

This resulted in multilayer coating capable of undergoing large-scale mechanical deformation, while maintaining the high level of conductivity typically associated with metal carbides.

Early tests have shown that these multilayer coatings can be successfully deposited on to flexible polymer sheets, stretchable silicones, nylon fiber, glass and silicon, opening the door for a wide variety of flexible electronics.

It is hoped that this technology can be used in the creation of adaptive displays, artificial skin, and biometric and wearable devices in future.
