UK 'will seek to remain part of European Medicines Agency after Brexit'

Pharmaceutical Government/ NHS related news

The UK is likely to aim to remain a member of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) even after it leaves the European Union.

Prime minister Theresa May has given a key speech on the government's Brexit policy, during which she stated that the UK will be seeking to remain under the auspices of the EMA, abiding by its rules and making an appropriate financial contribution.

“UK prime minister Theresa May has indicated that Britain will seek to remain part of the European Medicines Agency after Brexit.“

This would help to ensure that regulatory standards in the field of medicine will remain compatible between the UK and EU even after Brexit, while providing continuity in medicines regulation.

The pharmaceutical industry has responded positively to this news, with Niall Dickson, co-chair of the Brexit Health Alliance, describing this approach as the best way to ensure rapid access to lifesaving drugs and treatments.

Mike Thompson, chief executive of the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry, added: "Making sure the supply of medicines is uninterrupted is essential to ensure patients in the UK and EU can get the medicines they need from day one of Brexit."
