New report highlights vital role of vets in post-Brexit food industry

23rd February 2018

Ministers have been urged to support veterinary workers to ensure they can help the food industry thrive after the UK leaves the European Union.

The recommendation came from the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (EFRA) Committee, which said the veterinary workforce can help ensure the food industry's needs are met post-Brexit.

This has been welcomed by the British Veterinary Association, which said it is looking forward to seeing how these recommendations are taken forward by the government, as well as how ministers ensure the UK has the capacity to meet the challenges that Brexit may pose in food trade.

John Fishwick, president of the body, commented: "It is reassuring to see that animal welfare is high on the agenda for future negotiations around trade in food and that the vital role of vets in upholding these standards is fully recognised by the EFRA Committee."

He added that the committee has sent a strong message that Britain must maintain its high animal welfare, environmental and food standards in trade as it leaves the EU.
