GDC meets 23 out of 24 standards in new assessment by PSA

9th November 2017

The General Dental Council (GDC) has responded positively to the results of a recent inspection showing that the regulator is meeting the majority of expected standards.

According to the latest annual review of the GDC carried out by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA), the dental regulator was able to meet 23 out of 24 standards in 2017, including all four for standards and guidance, all four for education and training, all six for registration, and nine out of ten fitness to practise standards.

Fitness to practise remains a key area of continuing improvement for the GDC, which has come under criticism from the dental sector in the recent past for organisational issues.

In the last year, it has made efforts to improve its signposting to other organisations where a complaint would be better dealt with outside the fitness to practise process, while also introducing case examiners to replace the old investigation committee and streamline its procedures.

Additionally, it is working to reduce the time taken between receiving a complaint about a serious case and generating an interim order, as well as collaborating with the Samaritans to support vulnerable registrants.

Ian Brack, chief executive and registrar at the GDC, said: "The PSA standards are a helpful indicator of the GDC's improved performance."
