Lilly cancer drug to be evaluated in new Cancer Research UK study

24th August 2017

A Lilly-developed cancer drug is to be evaluated in a clinical trial assessing its benefits for patients with advanced solid tumours.

Cancer Research UK will spearhead this new study, which will take place at four centres across the UK, and will test the safety and tolerability of LY3143921 hydrate among patients with advanced bowel, lung, ovarian, urothelial, pancreatic, breast, head and neck, and oesophageal cancer.

The first part of the trial will focus on finding the safest dose that best targets the cancer cells, while the second part will see larger groups of patients receiving the highest tolerated dose, giving an insight into its effectiveness against cancer.

LY3143921 hydrate was discovered by Lilly and brought to Cancer Research UK through the charity's Clinical Development Partnership scheme. It is thought that it could be particularly effective in people with particular faults in their p53 genes, as these individuals have been shown to be especially receptive to the drug's mode of action.

Professor Richard Wilson, a Cancer Research UK-funded clinical researcher and chief investigator at the Northern Ireland Cancer Centre, said: "This trial will help us to understand whether this drug could help cancer patients and whether it has the potential to stop the growth of many different cancer types, particularly those with loss of p53 function."
