New smart T-shirt developed to monitor breathing rates

25th May 2017

Scientists at Universite Laval in Quebec have developed a new smart T-shirt that monitors the wearer's respiratory rate in an unobtrusive manner.

The shirt incorporates an antenna made of a hollow optical fibre and coated with a thin layer of silver on its inner surface, which is sewn in at chest level. As the wearer breathes in, the smart fibre senses the increase in thorax circumference and the volume of air in the lungs, without needing to be in direct contact with the wearer's skin.

Because it does not incorporate wires, electrodes or sensors attached to the user's body, the shirt is extremely comfortable, as well as being highly durable and resistant to laundering. The researchers put this to the test, showing that after 20 washes, the antenna withstood the water and detergent, remaining in good working condition.

This innovation could make it possible to create clothing for the diagnosis of respiratory illnesses or the monitoring of conditions such as asthma, sleep apnoea and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Professor Younes Messaddeq, who led the research project, said: "The T-shirt is really comfortable and doesn't inhibit the subject's natural movements. Our tests show that the data captured by the shirt is reliable whether the user is lying down, sitting, standing or moving around."
