New guidelines published to reduce sugar content from UK food

31st March 2017

Public Health England has published technical guidelines aimed at supporting the food industry's efforts to reduce the amount of sugar in its products.

The aim of the overall reduction programme is to see 200,000 tonnes of sugar removed from the UK market per year by 2020, thereby cutting the amount of sugar children consume through everyday foods that contribute the most to their intakes.

The guidance includes recommended sugar limits for nine food groups, including breakfast cereals; yoghurts; biscuits; cakes; morning goods such as croissants; puddings; ice creams, lollies and sorbets; confectionery; and sweet spreads.

Manufacturers are being encouraged to reformulate products to lower the levels of sugar present, or else to reduce portion sizes and the number of calories in single-serve products. Efforts to shift consumer purchasing towards lower-sugar products are also encouraged.

Duncan Selbie, chief executive of Public Health England, said: "We can't duck the fact a third of children are leaving primary school overweight or obese, and obesity generally is having a profound effect – not just on the costs for the health service, but on the overall health of the nation."

This comes as part of the government's wider childhood obesity plan, which seeks to reduce sugar levels by five percent by August 2017 and overall by 20 percent by 2020.
