BD launches new U-500 insulin syringe for diabetes treatment

16th November 2016

BD has announced the launch of a new syringe designed for people with diabetes taking Humulin R U-500 insulin.

The U-500 syringe is the first insulin syringe developed for diabetic patients being treated with Humulin R, which is manufactured by Lilly. BD worked alongside Lilly to develop this device.

Humulin R is concentrated insulin indicated for the treatment of high blood sugar in people with diabetes who need to inject more than 200 units of insulin per day. Without a dedicated U-500 syringe, it becomes necessary to take additional steps to manually convert U-500 insulin doses to the appropriate dose or volume.

Since this conversion can result in dosing errors, the new syringe offers significant benefits, as incorrect doses can lead to hyperglycaemia, hypoglycaemia or death.

Dr Laurence Hirsch, vice-president of global medical affairs for BD Diabetes Care, said: "This collaboration with Lilly exemplifies BD's continued commitment to provide solutions for all people with diabetes, regardless of the population size, who need tailored treatment options in order to receive better management of their insulin delivery methods."
