New augmented microscopy technology ‘offers greater accuracy’

8th October 2015

A prototype of a new microscope technology has been shown to offer the potential to enable more accurate and precise working for surgeons.

Developed by the University of Arizona, the technique – called augmented microscopy – overlays images and diagnostic information over real of images tissues and structures being viewed in the microscope.

This simultaneous view of real objects in the surgical field and computer-processed images superimposed in real time allows users to view data on blood flow and cancerous tissue, while retaining full three-dimensional stereoscopic vision and an imaging environment familiar to surgeons.

In brain surgery, for example, augmented microscopy will allow surgeons to see the surgical field and the contrast agent identifying cancerous tissue at the same time, helping them remove these challenging tumours more accurately.

Brian Pogue of Dartmouth College, associate editor of the Journal of Biomedical Optics, said: "There are very few papers on this idea of augmenting the surgical field of view that the surgeon sees, yet this is a high-interest topic."ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801802653-ADNFCR
