Veterinarians have described the illness as “atypical canine infectious respiratory disease” and plans have been put in place by the state to begin assessing the onset of the illness.

Dog owners have been advised to seek help if they notice lack of energy or cold and flu symptoms in their pets. Moreover, up-to-date immunizations and fewer interactions with other dogs can help reduce the illness's spread.

The Oregon Veterinary Medical Association added, “Just like with other respiratory pathogens, the more contacts your dog has, the greater the risk of encountering a dog that’s infectious.”
