“American electronics engineer Kevin Zhang has recently become a part of Getinge's Heart Surgery Research Institute in California“
Kevin came from a huge electronics company where he designed and manufactured electronic visual displays ranging from smart watches to TV's.
In his prior positions, Zhang has submitted almost 30 patents. Now he is based at Getinge’s Californian research facility where he will take on the role of Senior Principal Engineer, devoting his attention to developments that could minimise some of the dangers connected to difficult operations.
The primary focus is on “making current tools smarter and easier to use. More flexible and efficient procedures will help to reduce operating times, which improves productivity in the operating room.”
Kevin is certain that automation and artificial intelligence will have a significant impact on healthcare in the future.
“AI and machine learning can be used to help surgeons for improving surgeries and training of junior surgeons.” Commenting on remote operations, Kevin said that “thanks to advanced vision technology, smart sensors and 5G transmission of data, we could provide feedback that gives them a fingertip ‘feeling’ of the patient although they are not present in the OR.”
He is confident that one day “computers can be trained to perform entire surgeries in some areas. But this is a vision of the future.”
