Dr Mohsan Ahmas Describes How NHS Recruitment Crisis Exacerbates Industry Pressures

Dental facilities are becoming increasingly impacted by the squeeze during the current economic downturn, according to Dr. Mohsan Ahmad, a dentist in Greater Manchester. This is in part because they don't have the same level of financial assistance for expenses compared to other sectors of the healthcare industry.

To add insult to injury, the sector is also dealing with ongoing problems with hiring new staff.

“Dental facilities just don't have the same level of financial assistance for expenses compared to other sectors of the healthcare industry“

He said that "although there are new dentists qualifying, they don't have the appetite to want to work in the NHS and instead go down the private practice route."

This year, for the first time, one of his Tameside locations had failed to hire a single dentist.

He explained that "a lot of” the problem “is target driven. We have these things called UDA's, units of dental activity, which are hard to achieve”

Especially up north, several treatments are more frequently needed by patients, yet NHS dentists are only compensated for one of these treatments, rendering the process unattractive to the employment market.

"It just isn't financially viable - to have numerous appointments and get paid pittance for it."

Dr. Ahmad claimed that the reason the NHS website is so infrequently updated to reflect when a surgery is accepting new NHS dental candidates is because they "worry" about making announcements publicising openings and then being drowned with an influx of demand that immediately exceeds capacity.

Recently, the NHS introduced new programs that aim to increase financing for NHS dentists to help meet extra treatment demands, despite the fact that dental professionals have been “banging on about this for 10 to 12 years."

The issue is difficult to tackle, but according to Dr. Ahmad, it may be done so with adequate financing and assistance for dentists.
