Fellowship Report Outlines UK Vulnerability to Cyber Attacks

Service Engineering

According to a parliamentary briefing paper by Amber Keegan, part of the Ashok Kumar Fellowship, The UK is frequently experiencing cyber-attacks, with the biggest threat coming from individuals liked to Chinese and Russian states.

The report stated that, although Britain is claimed to have top-tier skills in cyber security and intelligence, we need more highly trained cyber personnel. The absence of an industrial base to produce and dispatch equipment, and insufficient investment compared the United States and China, make the issue worse.

The frequency and complexity of cyberattacks are growing, but the process of establishing worldwide cyber operations is complex, with worries about reputational damage, industry disruption, and not being aware that there has been a security breach.

In 2020–2021, 777 cyber-attacks were dealt with. That represents an increase of 30% in the last four years.

Other areas that are vulnerable to attacks are certain commercial industries, defence and academic sectors. A minimum of 18% were related to a state- whether directly or via sponsored groups, with almost half categorised as financially driven criminal activities.

The National Security Bill is now being debated in Parliament, and they’re revising the Computer Misuse Act, which was last given a thorough look over in 2015.

On November 23rd, Keegan, a postgraduate chemical engineer student, will provide a free webinar in which she will discuss her findings in further detail- including lessons she learned during her fellowship.

“The POST Fellowship was an incredible experience and has shown me just how widely the chemical engineering skillset can be applied. I would encourage anyone who loves engineering and is interested in exploring more about how it can impact society to apply for a POST Fellowship.”
