Dentists Desperate For Rishi Sunak to Take Action

26th October 2022

Yesterday, Liz Truss was formally replaced by Rishi Sunak.

Liz declared that her “top three” points of precedence in her initial 90 days as PM will include NHS dentistry. Her attempts to repeal the sugar tax drew strong disapproval from the healthcare industry, and dental practitioners coined the move a “serious error of judgement”.

Thérèse Coffey, health secretary, was also anticipated to change course on initiatives to combat smoking in the UK; initially declaring that “patients are my top priority.” But in her “Plan for Patients,” she neglected to include any further pledges to help with the issue.

If elected as PM, Rishi specifically vowed to “restore NHS dentistry”, starting by executing an “early intervention” plan with primary school dental appointments.

Moreover, he pledged to guarantee that allocated funds will not be spent elsewhere to lessen the strain on the NHS dental sector. Other strategies comprised of enhancing preventive measures and enticing dentists to remain employed by the NHS.

“I feel your pain and we do need good dentistry. The NHS is everyone’s number one public service priority.”

“If we’re going make sure that there is money for NHS dentistry, we just have to be bolder about reforming the NHS to get more efficiency out of it. We have over ten million missed appointments every year and it’s not just GPs.”

“If people can cancel them in advance properly, we free up all that extra capacity and none of us have had to pay an extra penny in taxes to do that. We believe in an NHS that’s free at the point of use, but its not free at the point of mis-use.”
