Liz Truss has removed the member of the Conservative party, Zac Goldmith, from his position supervising animal welfare at Defra following her government restructuring. He has been replaced by previous Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for International Trade, Ranil Jayawardena.

In a parting message to Defra employees Zac Goldsmith expressed his sadness at departing from the organisation after three "whirlwind" years. He posted this note on his Instagram page dated the 14th September 2022.

“Liz Truss has removed the member of the Conservative party, Zac Goldmith, from his position supervising animal welfare at Defra“

He noted that “we have so much more to do to turn the tide here. The UK is, after all, one of the world’s most nature-depleted countries. But if Defra continues to get the backing you need and deserve across government, you can, and you will turn the tide.”

The reorganisation didn’t stop there, with Mark Spencer, previously a Chief Whip, being named Defra Minister of State in place of Victoria Prentis. Prentis had been stationed in this role for over 24 months prior to this.
