MyMouthWorks: An Innovative Telehealth Platform for Monitoring Dental Health and Treatment

8th June 2022

Telehealth has become a hot-topic in recent years, particularly with the increased demand put on the NHS and private practitioners in providing continued, high-quality care to patients who need it under the constraints of the pandemic. However, these needs existed prior to lockdown regulations, with certain populations being under-provided for, and many different demographics requiring increased care that is difficult to access, as demonstrated by worsening oral health according to income, homeless people, incarcerated individuals, individuals with limited mobility such as the elderly, or those with certain disabilities, those housed in assisted-living situations, and refugees, where an established care system may not currently exist to support their needs. https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/970380/Inequalities_in_oral_health_in_England.pdf
Although the verdict is still out on whether remote healthcare is preferred to the alternative of longer waiting times for face-to-face consultations, the value of remote care in providing continuous monitoring, in-community care, and accessible resources to a greater number of people is clear.
MyMouthWorks is one such solution, developed by Innovative Oral Solutions, monitoring weekly progress of patients by generating progress reports, providing image upload functions, and monitoring trajectory from the baseline assessment carried out during the initial consultation. MyMouthWorks currently monitors a range of disorders, including open bite, overbite, underbite, crossbite, tongue thrust, temporomandibular joint disorders, lingual frenectomy, and sleep apnoea. Each of these conditions is managed initially on a 16-week programme, and aids in creating a collaborative digital environment where ongoing communication between practitioner and patient helps in compliance, informs adaptations to the programme in line with the patient’s needs, and does all of this without the need for frequent appointments. Furthermore, its use is expected to be relevant to the work of a range of people within the dental sector, including dentists, orthodontists, speech and language therapists, and oral surgeons.
If little progress is seen over time in a patient, help and advice is provided, useful prompts, and a reward system help to overcome the lag and generate the results they wanted to see. This provides solutions to symptoms experienced over time, rather than simply a cover-all approach to the diagnosed condition. This versatility and personalisation means that a more collaborative and holistic approach to treating many common conditions may improve patient outcomes and experience, empowering them in their care and journey to better oral health.
