FDA Approves Spikevax Covid 19 Vaccine for Adults

The FDA in the United States has authorized a new Covid 19 vaccine, called Spikevax (previously Moderna), for adults. The Moderna inoculation has been employed in emergency situations (given EUA) since December of last year.

Spikevax and Moderna (used for emergency use only) are interchangeable because they have the same formula.

A study looked at over 14,200 adults who had received the Spikevax vaccines and over 14,100 who received placebos. None of the participants had Covid 19 symptoms before getting the first injection.

Results showed that the new injection is 93% likely to protect from Covid 19 and 98% likely to stop the occurrence of serious illness. There were just 55 Covid cases out of those who were injected, compared to 744 who received the placebo.

Janet Woodcock, a senior official for the US FDA, expressed that "The FDA's approval of Spikevax is a significant step in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. The public can be assured that Spikevax meets the FDA's high standards for safety, effectiveness and manufacturing quality required of any vaccine approved for use in the United States."
