Prince of Wales unveils new veterinary facilities at Aberystwyth University

14th December 2021

Prince Charles, who once studied at Aberystwyth University, has launched Wales’ first school for veterinary science. The University’s Penglais campus is now home to the new addition, which cost £2 million.

The investment consisted of £500,000 given by alumni as well as Aberystwyth’s own financial input. During his time there, the Prince of Wales put his name in the visitors’ record book which he last signed as a student there back in the 1960s.

The students will experience a standard educational programme for the veterinary course. The requirement is to spend a couple of years at Aberystwyth, then spend an additional three years at the Royal Veterinary College’s Hawkshead Campus.

Prince Charles said: “I have very special memories of that time and finding my way around Aberystwyth generally. I’m so impressed having seen what the school has done here and am delighted to have had a very small part to play in helping to open it. I do hope [the students] will have great success in the future and the school will flourish.”

The Welsh University’s Chancellor, Lord Thomas of Cwmgïedd, expressed that “We are immensely grateful to him for opening the school which is, without a doubt, of great national significance. Tremendous thanks go to the staff, students, donors, and all our partners who have enabled us to begin training vets in Wales for the first time.”
