Key responsibilities:
1) Medical Writing
-Clearly identify the communication objectives of a project by working with a more senior member of the medical or client services team, or, if appropriate, by working directly with the client
-Ensure production of high quality medical writing across a range of communications such as journal manuscripts, marketing communications (e.g. newsletters, product monographs), meetings-related materials (e.g. abstracts, slides) and new media (e.g. inter/intranet sites)
-Ensure that medical copy is scientifically accurate, clear, and appropriate to the target audience
-Ensure that medical copy is produced in accordance with the client's preferred style and that it meets the communication objectives of the client
-Provide suitable original illustrations to accompany text and ensure that permission to use illustrations has been obtained from the publisher/author

2) Editing
Depending on the need, Medical Writers may be required to provide support to the Editorial and Production Manager in the editing of medical and scientific communications. This would involve some or all of the following duties:
-Quality control a colleague's work (to check for grammar, spelling and consistency) before it is sent to the client
-Production edit the final draft (for accuracy, consistency and readability, in accordance with the Chameleon SOPs) before it is sent to the client for sign off
-Check artwork
-Adapt manuscripts to journal requirements
-Check references to ensure their accuracy and validity
-Prepare submission packs for manuscript submission

3) Project Admin & Organisation
-Manage and update project files
-Call, attend and contribute to internal project briefing/discussion meetings
-Where appropriate, attend client meeting
-Assist the Publications Director in monitoring actual writing hours/costs against those budgeted, and where appropriate, implement incremental billing
-Assist the MPD and CSD in producing budgets for projects
-Keep project files and references up-to-date
-Keep the Medical Director, Medical Projects Director, Publications Director and CSD regularly informed about the status of projects
-Alert the Publications Director and CSD to potential problems on projects and discuss possible solutions

4) Attendance at Scientific Meetings
-Attend scientific meetings (e.g. conferences, roundtable meetings and workshops) to provide on-site support, gather appropriate information (e.g. notes, tape recordings) for communication outputs and, where appropriate, manage faculty members

5) Medical Review & Mentoring
-Provide constructive comments when reviewing a colleague's work for medical/scientific content
-Provide mentoring and on-the-job training for more junior members of the client service team
-Provide constructive feedback to the MPD and CSD regarding the above two points

6) Bew Business
-Work with the Publications Director to expand current business by suggesting new projects
-Work with New Business colleagues on the development of proposals and, when required, attend and present at New Business pitches

From time to time you may be asked to undertake other duties. If these duties become permanent, they will, after discussion with you, be included in your job description. From time to time you may also be expected to work at weekends (e.g. to attend scientific meetings, congresses), and to carry out duties that arise due to sickness or holidays of other staff.
