The role of a Medical Science Liaison
The primary purpose of a Pharmaceutical Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is to establish and maintain relationships with key opinion leaders (or physicians as they are known as) at major institutions and clinics. MSL’s work throughout a products lifecycle, ensuring that they are used effectively and serve as a resource within the Medical Community. They become a specialist within a specific therapy area (i.e. Oncology, cardiology women’s health) or disease state. This role will involve a lot of client visits rather than being based in an office.
Over the years, companies have used various names for this role including, Medical Managers, Regional Scientific Managers, Clinical Liaisons, and Scientific Affairs Managers.

Qualifications
To become a Medical Science Liaison, you will need to have a doctorate degree (Ph.D. PharmD., M.D.) or graduate level education in nursing or other life science. It’s also advantageous to have a few years of clinical experience, and you must be able to demonstration that you have excellent communication skills (both written and oral) as well as good presentation skills.
