Scientific Advisor

Title : Scientific Advisor

Therapy Areas : Immunology & Rheumatology & Virology

Role : This position is responsible for providing the Nucleus Group and its clients with scientific judgments related to client project needs and Group client proposals and strategies. To provide scientific documents for publication or internal use according to client needs and project objectives. Also responsible for writing, editing, and proof-reading text for Group products and working with the design and production teams to produce a range of printed and computer-based materials that meet the needs of the Group's clients. Finally, interacting when requested with outside scientists and physicians on critical therapeutic and scientific issues.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1) Scientific Consultation
* Researching scientific areas and providing reviews of scientific and therapeutic areas relevant to client goals and requests
* Developing Group proposals on scientific themes to enhance the Group's position in client programs and to gain new business
* Interacting when appropriate with outside scientists and physicians to gain insight for client programs and to enhance outside reputation of the Nucleus Group

2) Editorial
* Research and information management
* Researching and sourcing appropriate information for the Group's editorial projects and proposals, often within a tight timeframe, using resources available within the Group efficiently and effectively
* Tracking references using the Group's Reference Manager system and creating and maintaining appropriate databases and filing systems for in-house information

3) General writing
* Taking, interpreting, and developing briefs from colleagues and clients
* Conceptual development for editorial projects
* Drafting and editing work in different writing styles and targeted at different audiences in different therapeutic areas
* Editing and re-writing drafts to take account of feedback from editorial colleagues, project team colleagues, clients, and independent clinicians
* Employing an accurate, thorough, and scientific copy-editing and proof-reading approach to reviewing own work at every stage and work of others in the editorial team when requested
* Demonstrating an in-depth understanding of one or more of the Group's key therapeutic areas, defined by the individual's line manager, according to projects allocated
* Devising interview questions and interviewing opinion leaders

4) Business Development
* Assisting with, or taking the lead role, in the creative development and preparation of proposals and pitches for new business; attending and presenting at pitches where deemed appropriate
* Seizing opportunities for organic growth of the Group's accounts and advising senior strategic colleagues of any potential opportunities to develop new business

5) Client Support
* On-site meeting attendance
* Attending conferences, scientific symposia, and advisory boards where required, and undertaking on-site activities as deemed appropriate (e.g. front-of-house duties, printing and duplicating slide-sets, running slide review meetings with client)
* Taking comprehensive notes, and recording sessions where required (using a camcorder, tape recorder, or mini-disk recorder)
* Preparing rapid turnaround newsletters from conference sessions in various formats and styles. This may include writing, editing, working with designers, proof-reading, or liaising with speakers and clients to gain copy approval prior to publication
* Collecting any relevant information available on-site e.g. competitor information for exhibition stands

6) Project Management
* Project management of one or more editorial projects (e.g. CME-accredited training materials)
* Providing guidance on editorial time for project estimates/schedules where requested by senior editorial colleagues
* Determining deadlines and budgeted editorial hours for each project undertaken
* Ensuring assigned tasks are completed on time and within the time allocated in the project estimate; providing adequate warning when this begins to look unlikely (so that alternative arrangements can be made if necessary)
* Contributing ideas to senior management to enhance productivity/competitive edge of the Nucleus Group
* Coordinating with client services and other colleagues to reach a consensus on content and style for assigned editorial projects
* Liaising with in-house design and production teams, sourcing graphical representations, and contributing ideas for optimizing design and layout of assigned editorial projects
* Supporting project teams, contributing ideas, and sharing experiences by drawing on working knowledge of the different tools available for communicating messages in the pharmaceutical industry
* Playing an active role in establishing a cohesive and dynamic relationship between accounts team, other editorial colleagues, and the client
* Communicating regularly with editorial teams in the Group's other offices in order to share ideas and achieve greater efficiency in all editorial aspects of the company
* Providing informal support and guidance to Associate Medical Writers where deemed appropriate
* Coordinating at an appropriate level with external parties such as clients and opinion leaders (e.g. liaising with speakers in the preparation of briefing notes and slide presentations)
* Commissioning of articles

Person Profile

Candidates :

* A bachelor's degree in the life sciences required, ideally combined with a Master's degree or PhD
* At least four year's relevant medical writing experience

- OR an appropriate combination of education and experience

* General computer literacy required, and competency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and online medical resources such as Medline
