Field Service Engineer

Instrumentation includes automated systems and multimode detection instruments, used in academic/research and hospital laboratories.

Exciting opportunity to work for a specialist global scientific company that manufacture instruments used in healthcare drug development and diagnostic testing.
This position has arisen due to business growth within the service department.


Role: provide instrumentation service and preventative maintenance support to external and internal customers requiring travel throughout the UK and Ireland (up to 75% of the time). There will also be requirements to repair instruments in the workshop in Southampton (probably 3-4 times per month), so applicants living within a couple of hours of Southampton would be ideally located.

Key Responsibilities:
- Participate in pre- and post-sales support, installation, instrument preventive maintenance, repair and service support.
- Develop and maintain strong internal and external customer relationships by acting as a liaison between the customer and various internal departments, bringing field issues in-house and providing the necessary follow up.
- Communicate with the customer to ensure satisfaction and implement any necessary corrective actions.
- Recommend improvements to equipment installation and operational qualification test plans and protocols in accordance with design requirements, operational needs, and applicable standards.
- Manage information on specific technical hardware / software / system performance related issues to determine root cause, identify alternatives, and implement a solution with the wider technical team.
- Forecast and maintain instrument spare parts inventory and manage parts stocking and availability.
- Understand and comply with ethical, legal and regulatory requirements applicable to the business.
- Attend meetings, seminars and customer site visits, requiring domestic travel (up to 75% of the time).

Person Specification:
- Bachelor's degree in scientific or engineering discipline, or relevant electro-mechanical qualification, ideally HNC or above.
- 2 or more years of hands-on laboratory instrumentation support experience.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, customer-focused, reliable, results orientated, flexible, and energetic.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Can write instructions and reports.
- Computer experience using programs including, but not limited to, Windows, Word, Excel, as well as Customer Relationship Management and Enterprise Resource Planning systems. In addition, ability to learn and use new programs as needed. Experience with Internet technology also desirable.
- Prior experience working in a field instrument service organization.
- Experience working in a cGMP, ISO 9000, and/or ISO 13485 environment is preferred.
