An endoscopy can be used to investigate and area of the body where symptoms suggest that there could be an underlying problem. An endoscope (a thin tube with a light and video camera on the end) is used. Depending on where the problem area is, this can be inserted into the body via a natural opening or through a small surgical incision made on the skin (keyhole surgery). There are a few different types of endoscopes that can be used to examine different common areas that cause discomfort including colonoscopies (large intestine), gastroscopes (throat and stomach) and broncoscopes (lungs and airways).
