Director of R&D

We're looking for an R&D Director to join & lead the team in Newcastle. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced R&D Director, you'll be responsible for leading and growing the Newcastle R&D team, developing the group into a whole as a groundbreaking cancer diagnostics unit aligned with the Advanced Staining vision. This unit will successfully transition innovative projects from conceptualisation stage to commercially viable products within set time parameters and in line with regulatory requirements, crafting implementing and driving strategies to support short and long term business needs. You'll work as a member of the Newcastle Senior Management Team, representing R&D, supporting the site from a management point of view and helping to maintain effective cross departmental working.

In this role, you'll
· Provide leadership to the R&D team. Build the capability of the team - attract, recruit, retain and develop top talent.
· Ensure all R&D projects are managed using the appropriate business processes, supervised against project objectives, timescales and to budget
· Provide both operational and scientific mentorship on processes as required
· Work with the QA and Regulatory team to ensure that all work stays in sync with regulatory directives in Leica's focus markets
· Contribute to the building of a harmonious and collaborative partnership within the Advanced Staining and Imaging Leadership team. Work with the adjacent business units (Melbourne, Amsterdam and Danvers) as well as Innovation, BD and CDX teams to assess potential opportunities in the marketplace through building relationships with key opinion leaders at the highest level
· Participate in customer, collaborator or distributor visits, demonstrations, and training as requested.
· Implement effective system for regular resource planning to ensure the available resource is used optimally, development plans are in place for high potential R&D staff in talent review, and a structured succession plan for growth developed

What you'll need to do the job
· Relevant degree in Science field
· Further relevant degree MSc or PHD
· Proven track record in a similar role, including having been personally responsible for managing innovative, Class III R&D projects
· Confident leadership style with experience of leading a sizable R&D team, across different cultures
· Experience of relevant Regulatory and Quality Procedures
· Ideally record in development role in histopathology and/or cancer biology
· Ideally experience of Molecular and other diagnostic techniques, in particular immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridisation techniques
· Flexibility to work across a variety of time zones and deal with <40%travel
· Ability to demonstrate values through passion for scientific excellence, courage to face challenges and excellence in delivering outstanding results.

· A strategic and analytical problem solver.
· Confident interpersonal, public speaking and communication skills.
