The number of job vacancies for graduates is increasing

The number of graduates who got jobs at companies featured in The Times Top 100 Graduate Employers raised by 4.3% in 2018. And it’s expected that the UK’s top employers will increase the number of their graduate vacancies by 9.1% in 2019.  It means that this year, students will have more job options to choose from.

Eleven out of fifteen key industries are currently planning to hire more new graduates. So whether applicants hold a degree in marketing, psychology, or finance, they will have a chance to land a first job at a big company.

Banks continue to maintain pulling power

The most significant increases in vacancies are expected in the banking sector, the public sector, and the engineering sector. Companies that operate in these sectors intend to hire more than 1,500 additional graduates in 2019.

In 2018, the largest banks received a record number of student applications:

Deutsche Bank got more than 110,000 student applications for its UK graduate scheme

Citi Bank opened 520 jobs for graduates and attracted more than 60,000 applications

Morgan Stanley opened 1,000 summer analyst jobs and received more than 100,000 applications.

Statistics show that competition among the graduates was intense in 2018. But since corporations are going to open more jobs, more students will get a chance to land a job this year.

Employers are going to open more paid programs

In 2019, graduates have higher chances to get offered with paid work experience places at the UK’s companies comparing to previous years.  This year more than 80 big corporations have offered paid work experience places for students and graduates. They provided in total more than 13,000 places. According to the recent data, leading graduate employers are going to increase the number of paid work experience programs by at least 1.8% till the end of the year.

UK graduate pool is shrinking

The graduate talent pool is shrinking for a few reasons. The first reason is that more graduates opt for a second degree rather than joining the job market. The second reason is that young people tend to choose freelance jobs over traditional employment.  

.“Today, companies have limited access to the graduate talent pool, so they take the graduate recruitment process more seriously. They use advanced techniques to conduct an in-depth assessment in order to hire the best students available,” says Tracey Scott, recruitment manager at PickWriters.

Employers start using websites and social media

Since job postings on university notice boards do not work any longer, companies start using online tools and social media to reach out to graduates. Nine in ten employers state that their graduate recruitment websites work more effectively than other tools.

However, most companies also use social media: 69% of employers find LinkedIn to be very effective, 46% find Facebook to be effective, and 21% find YouTube to be quite an effective way to reach out to young candidates online.

Recruiters are focused more on behaviours rather on qualifications

Since the vast most of the graduates have no previous work experience, employers focus their attention on applicants’ key behaviours rather than qualifications. According to the resent study, 75% of HR recruitment professionals use psychometric testing on a regular basis, and 78% consider this approach as a “powerful tool for hiring”.

It’s expected that screening methods (e.g., psychometric assessments) will become more popular among UK employers in the next few years. It means that applicants with high potential and enthusiastic attitude will have high chances to land a job regardless of what university they attended and what degree they hold.

Artificial Intelligence is becoming a key element of graduate recruitment

In the last two years, dozens of UK companies started using AI-enabled chatbots to run candidate screening. It has helped employers to automate essential administrative processes and smooth onboarding processes.

Besides, some companies have started using AI-powered chatbots to encourage prospective candidates to apply for a job. Since Millennials and Generation Z are tech-obsessed, AI implementation helps companies to attract the best young graduates.
