Expectations
of the consumer have changed rapidly in the eye-care
market. A far cry from the days of boxy, basic spectacles
that would only be worn by those seriously in need
of visual correction, eye-care is now a thriving High
Street industry.
Spectacles, contact lenses / solutions
and other eye-care products are now fashion
accessories – and the products are commanding premium prices.
It is estimated that the UK market for ophthalmic goods and services will grow
at around 12 per cent annually.
The future of the Ophthalmic Industry will depend on the new treatments becoming
available. If laser or surgical correction of sight problems, together with new
drugs and research become more widely available, the need for corrective eyewear
(spectacles and contact lenses) may be significantly reduced in the future.
Whatever the future may bring, Ophthalmic positions will always exist for promotion,
research, marketing and selling existing or innovative solutions.
