BMA raises concerns over medical trainee recruitment trends

22nd September 2017

The British Medical Association (BMA) has highlighted a recent decline in the number of medical trainees that could accelerate the recent skills shortage suffered by the NHS.

A review of recruitment by the organisation has indicated that training places across three in four medical specialties went unfilled last year, with many areas experiencing year-on-year shortfalls.

Moreover, fewer people are picking medicine as a career and staying on as NHS doctors at each stage of training, while applications to medical schools have dropped for the third year running, especially among overseas potential students from other EU countries.

The BMA said the current trends were reflective of unsustainable NHS workloads caused by a lack of funding and proper staffing levels, which is leading to stress and burnout, as well as a decline in morale and wellbeing.

Additionally, uncertainty over Brexit may be making the UK a less appealing destination for talented European students.

BMA council chair Chaand Nagpaul said: "We have to ask why people who have spent many years training to become doctors are deciding not to continue in the profession."
