Alcon commences EU Jetrea rollout with UK launch
Alcon has introduced the new vitreomacular traction therapy Jetrea in the UK following the drug's recent approval by European regulators.
Having received a positive decision from the European Commission last month, the company has introduced the product in the UK as the first step in a wider EU rollout, thus triggering a milestone payment to developmental partner ThromboGenics.
Jetrea is a one-time, single intravitreal injection to treat adults affected by the age-related and progressive condition, which can cause visual distortion, weaker eyesight and eventual blindness if left unchecked.
The drug is currently undergoing a single technology appraisal by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence with the aim of gaining reimbursement for use within the NHS.
Dr Patrik De Haes, chief executive officer of ThromboGenics, said: "The launch of Jetrea in Europe by Alcon so shortly after gaining European approval is testimony of our joint commitment to ensuring patients in Europe have access to this innovative drug as soon as possible."
