Alcon receives EU approval for vitreomacular traction therapy
Alcon has been granted approval by the European Commission for an innovative new therapy for vitreomacular traction (VMT).
Jetrea has been ratified as an intravitreal injection-based treatment for VMT, including when associated with macular hole of diameter less than or equal to 400 microns.
In pivotal clinical trials, Jetrea was shown to deliver a successful resolution of VMT and closure of macular holes compared to placebo within 28 days of treatment, requiring only a single injection to be effective.
This could be an important new therapy option for an eyesight-threatening condition which is currently treated exclusively using surgical techniques.
Stuart Raetzman, president for the Europe, Middle East and Africa region at Alcon, said: "Jetrea meets a genuine unmet patient need and demonstrates Alcon's commitment to bringing innovative eye care treatments to people in Europe and throughout the world."
Last week, the company made efforts to raise awareness of eye health issues among patients across the globe, coinciding with the World Glaucoma Week initiative.
