KCI’s Prevena shows benefits in clinical study

KCI has highlighted data from a new clinical trial that demonstrates the benefits offered by its Prevena Incision Management System for vascular surgery patients.

The Louisiana State University study, which was published in the Journal of Vascular Surgery, showed that the device was able to significantly decreased the incidence of groin surgical site infections (SSI) among those undergoing surgery.

Groin wound infection is a significant cause of post-operative complications in vascular surgery patients and can increase the length of a hospital stay by more than nine days, adversely affecting their quality of life and increasing the cost of care.

Dr Ron Silverman, chief medical officer at KCI, said: "These results underscore a significant clinical and economic benefit of the Prevena System for patients considered at risk for developing a groin SSI."

This comes after the company reported data from a German study last month showing that Prevena is also able to prevent infections among obese patients following surgery.
