Hologic’s 3D mammography technology shows breast cancer benefits
Hologic has announced data from a new study showing how its 3D mammography technology can help increase breast cancer detection accuracy.
According to data from a study published in Radiology, adding 3D mammography to a 2D breast screening exam enables doctors to detect 40 percent more invasive cancers and reduce the number false positives compared to a 2D exam alone.
This study was conducted using Hologic technology and was led by Dr Per Skaane of Oslo University Hospital Ullevaal, based on 12,631 screening examinations in a large hospital in Norway.
Rob Cascella, Hologic's president and chief executive officer, said this was "the first large-scale prospective study to show the additional cancers found with 3D mammography in combination with 2D mammography were invasive cancers – the very type of cancers we want to detect and treat early".
Earlier this month, the company announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to sell its Lifecodes business unit to Immucor, a move that will help it to increase its focus on its fundamental growth strategies.
