Novo Nordisk study highlights hypoglycaemic event risk
Novo Nordisk research has highlighted that hypoglycaemic events among people with type 2 diabetes can provide a major challenge to blood sugar control.
The global survey revealed four-in-five people living with the condition have experienced the ailment, which has affected their ability to manage the illness – while also impacting morbidity, mortality and quality of life.
Some 36 percent of individuals living with type 2 diabetes have experienced an episode of low blood sugar in the last month, while 80 percent have treated the problem themselves.
The Global Attitudes of Patients and Physicians study noted that hypoglycaemic episodes can impact the way patients manage their condition, which was funded by Novo Nordisk, also noted nearly half of respondents reported rising blood glucose monitoring as a result of their last instance of the condition.
Lead researcher and health psychologist Dr Meryl Brod of The Brod Group, Mill Valley, said: "Less than optimal patient responses to self-treated hypoglycaemia and non-adherent behaviour need to be addressed to improve glycaemic control and patient welfare.
