Novo Nordisk has been presented with a prestigious design award in Germany for the innovative nature of its next-generation insulin injection pen NovoPen 5.
The company has earned the red dot Best of the Best prize for 2012, beating more than 4,500 other products and joining previous winners such as the Apple iPhone and BMW 5 series.
NovoPen 5 provides patient safety benefits thanks to a memory function that informs users whether they have taken their dose, helping them avoid missing injections or accidentally overdosing.
This technology has been integrated into the pen while also ensuring the product retains a sleek and discrete design, which is a key priority for patients.
The expert jury judging the awards said: "This injection pen impresses with its clear language of form and possesses a well thought-out, self-explanatory functionality."
Last month, Novo Nordisk announced a new research and development collaboration with JDRF, the leading global organisation dedicated to combating type 1 diabetes.
