Astellas to commence kidney cancer drug trial

11th June 2012

Astellas and Aveo Oncology have announced plans to commence a new clinical study of tivozanib, their new treatment for advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC).

The Taurus trial will aim to establish additional data regarding tivozanib when used as a first-line therapy in patients with advanced RCC by comparing its efficacy with that of the alternative treatment option sunitinib.

Approximately 160 patients will be enrolled at sites across the US and western Europe, with the goal being to develop a clearer understanding of the tolerability profile of the new drug.

Tivozanib recently completed a pivotal phase III trial called Tivo-1, in which it demonstrated superiority in progression-free survival and favourable tolerability in first-line advanced RCC when compared to a leading alternative.

Dr Steven Ryder, president for global development at Astellas Pharma, said: "The study supports Astellas' goal of leadership in oncology and our commitment to improving patient care."

This comes after the company reported positive data from a new study of its prostate cancer therapy enzalutamide earlier this month.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801381393-ADNFCR
