Hospira Healthcare announces syringe warning

23rd May 2012

Hospira Healthcare has released a warning to medical professionals making use of its pre-filled Carpuject Syringe System, explaining that certain devices may contain more medication than is stated on the label.

The notice applies to Carpuject syringes and the 2mL iSecure presentations of midazolam and ondansetron within expiration, which includes 15 drugs all manufactured between January 2010 and February 2012.

Diazepam, fentanyl citrate, sodium chloride, morphine sulphate and ondansetron are among the products at risk.

A full list is available on the company's website, although it has yet to receive any reports of adverse issues involving their syringe products to date.

Following the identification of this issue, Hospira has implemented corrective procedures to stop it from occurring in any of its newly-produced devices.
It warned that medical professionals should be conscious of the possibility of accidental overdose for patients.

Hospira is one of the world's leading providers of drug infusion solutions, offering IV sets and suction products, among other devices.
