Amgen honours passing of founding CEO

Amgen has paid tribute to its founding chief executive officer (CEO) George Rathmann following the news of his recent passing.

Mr Rathmann was recruited by company founder Bill Bowes to lead the fledgling business from 1980 to 1988, while he also acted as chairman of the board until 1990.

An award-winning industry expert, the business leader was praised by Amgen for his passion and charisma, as well as his role in attracting talent and investment for the company during its crucial early years.

A full-size sculpture of Mr Rathmann was dedicated on Amgen's campus in 2004, followed in 2005 by the creation of the annual George B Rathmann Award, an accolade presented to staff members who exemplify Amgen's standards of excellence.

Kevin Sharer, the current chairman and CEO of Amgen, said: "Bob Bradway, our next CEO, and I both share George's commitment to patients and conviction that being science-based is the best foundation for innovation in biotechnology."

The California-based company employs around 17,000 people worldwide and serves patients affected by cancer, kidney disease, rheumatoid arthritis, bone disease and other serious ailments.
