Boston Scientific launches new urology product BackStop Gel

3rd April 2012

Boston Scientific has announced the launch of a new gel product for use in the prevention of stone migration during urologic procedures.

BackStop Gel is now being marketed in the US and selected international markets, providing a water-soluble polymer that can be injected into the ureter to form a plug behind the stone, preventing migration of stone fragments.

The gel is placed using a catheter that can then be removed to free up space in the operative field, while the lack of mechanical components prevents any accidental damage from devices used to fragment the stone.

It is the latest minimally invasive and cost-effective medical device offering from Boston Scientific to be designed with the aim of improving patient outcomes.

Michael Phalen, executive vice-president and president of the Boston Scientific MedSurg division, said: "The BackStop Gel … provides a clinically effective method for urologists to manage the common problem of stone migration during treatment procedures."

Last week, the company published new data from a clinical study of its Alair bronchial thermoplasty system, showing the safety, efficacy and long-term positive health outcomes it can provide.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801332745-ADNFCR
