BVA welcomes Northern Irish animal welfare initiatives

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) has welcomed new commitments by Northern Ireland's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) to improve animal welfare standards.

New draft codes have been published by the regional government on the welfare of rabbits, horses and primates, explaining or giving practical advice on key needs as outlined in the Welfare of Animals Act.

These include the requirement for a suitable environment, healthy diet and appropriate company, as well as protection from pain, suffering and disease.

The BVA and North of Ireland Veterinary Association have both responded positively to the publications, highlighting the urgent necessity for more widespread understanding of the needs of these animals.

Carl Padgett, the BVA's president, said: "DARD must be applauded for creating these opportunities to provide detailed guidance on responsible ownership of rabbits and horses, as well as the keeping of primates."

Last week, the organisation praised the UK government for proposals to reconstitute the committees of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, in order to improve the regulation of British vets.
