New funding boost announced for frontline NHS care

The Department of Health has confirmed that an additional 100 million pounds of funding will be allocated to frontline NHS care.

Announced this week by health secretary Andrew Lansley, the funding will be used to support doctors in clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) and their efforts improve services on a local basis.

For example, commissioners could use the funds to extend GP practice opening times, improve out-of-hours services and local nursing home arrangements, or offer a better cover system for urgent care providers.

It is the first time that CCGs – which are comprised of GPs and local clinical professionals – have been allocated money to spend on patient services, thus taking advantage of their insight into local healthcare needs.

"Moving decision-making closer to patients will mean 'no decision about me without me' and ensures that patients receive the right care according to their individual needs," said Mr Lansley.

This comes after the department confirmed last month that 91.6 million pounds will be spent directly by primary care trusts in the 2012-13 fiscal year.
