Pfizer reports positive Toviaz trial data for elderly patients

6th December 2011

Pfizer has reported positive results from a study evaluating its overactive bladder treatment Toviaz among vulnerable elderly patients.

The drug was assessed during a study called A0221049, which aimed to support the efficacy and safety of Toviaz in a flexible dosage regimen compared to placebo over a period of 12 weeks.

Pfizer's treatment was shown to offer significant superiority in reducing the mean number of urgent urinary incontinence episodes per day at the end of treatment, while no new safety concerns were raised.

Dr Steven Romano, senior vice-president and head of the medicines development group at Pfizer's global primary care business unit, said this is the first study of any antimuscarinic agent to demonstrate efficacy among this patient group.

"For older individuals with overactive bladder, incontinence accompanied by urgency is the symptom that is most bothersome and embarrassing and greatly impacts their overall quality of life," he added.

This follows the publication of data from Study A0221048 last month, which demonstrated Toviaz's efficacy in addressing symptoms such as nocturnal urinary urgency.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801230610-ADNFCR
