Elsevier and Fulbright Commission honour young researchers

Elsevier has partnered with the US-UK Fulbright Commission to present the 2011 UK Scopus Young Researcher Award, which honour the work of promising scientific talents in Britain.

Eight students from the Universities of Nottingham, Cambridge, Southampton, East Anglia, Leeds and Liverpool were among those recognised under the scheme, which is designed to help support the growth and development of UK research talent.

Additionally, the Universities of Manchester, Oxford and Southampton were granted the 2011 Scopus Fostering Young Researchers Institutional Award, having trained 11 of the shortlisted candidates.

Winners were selected by a jury of former Fulbright Scholars, journal editors and other experts, based on publication and citation information from Elsevier's SciVerse Scopus database.

Ron Mobed, Elsevier's chief executive officer for science and technology, said: "The pool of talent we have been able to draw from to ultimately select the eight winners was enormous, which emphasises the UK's ability to create a competitive yet collaborative environment for researchers."

Earlier this month, the company announced the launch of a campaign called Pillars of Hope, which will see it providing donations to International Crisis Aid.
