Otsuka and Lundbeck agree neuroscience research alliance
Otsuka has announced a new alliance with Lundbeck on the development of several new therapies for psychiatric disorders.
The neuroscience-focused deal will see the companies enter into a long-term partnership to create and commercialise up to five new products, building on the established expertise of both companies in the central nervous system (CNS) field.
It will commence with a $1.8 billion (1.14 billion pounds) agreement to co-develop two late-stage compounds from Otsuka, aripiprazole depot formulation and OPC-34712, splitting responsibilities for launching the drugs in different territories.
The firms have stated that their shared corporate cultures and focus on innovative approaches makes this alliance potentially beneficial to patients worldwide.
Dr Taro Iwamoto, president and representative director for Otsuka, said: "Lundbeck's expertise in developing depression and anxiety treatments and Otsuka's expertise in developing antipsychotics will maximise the medical and commercial value of Otsuka's portfolio in CNS."
This comes after Otsuka increased its global influence earlier this year by becoming an approved member of the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations.
