Almirall presents positive phase III data for Sativex

2nd November 2011

Almirall has published fresh clinical data relating to Sativex as a treatment for spasticity in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients.

The results of three phase III trials were presented by the company at last month's European Congress of Multiple Sclerosis in Amsterdam, where experts explained how Sativex has demonstrated long-term efficacy in treating patients with moderate to severe spasticity.

"[It] has proven to reduce the severity of symptoms and improve patients' quality of life and functional status … meaning that they can undertake everyday tasks more easily," said Professor HP Hartung, chair of neurology at Heinrich-Heine University in Dusseldorf.

Bertil Lindmark, chief scientific officer at Almirall, added that he believes the treatment can offer "a new way to help patients with MS spasticity".

The Spanish company has also announced the launch of two new postgraduate grants aimed at encouraging clinical research into multiple sclerosis spasticity across Europe.

Amsterdam's RAI Congress and Conference Centre hosted the 27th European Congress of Multiple Sclerosis, which ran from October 19th to 22nd.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800783887-ADNFCR
