Takeda begins phase III trials of diabetes drug
Takeda has commenced a phase III clinical trial programme for TAK-875, an investigational therapy for type 2 diabetes.
In association with the Takeda global research and development centres in the US and Europe, the Japanese firm will be initiating trials in multiple territories with the aim of delivering glucose-lowering effects for patients.
The first of the trials will cover the US, Latin America and Europe and will involve around 450 patients over a 24-week period, with results to be produced by 2014.
Completed studies of the drug, which is the first GPR40 agonist therapy to reach late stage clinical development, have already shown its ability to enhance glucose-dependent insulin secretion.
Dr Thomas Strack, vice-president of clinical science at the Takeda Global Research and Development Center in the US, said: "Takeda is committed to enhancing the clinical investigation of TAK-875 in order to accelerate the development of a potential new type 2 diabetes treatment option for patients and healthcare professionals."
Earlier this month, the company announced the completion of its takeover of Nycomed, thereby strengthening its presence in the European market.
