Ranbaxy launches generic esomeprazole in UK

Ranbaxy has announced the successful launch of a generic version of esomeprazole in the UK this month.

The company has become the first to receive marketing approval for an off-label bio-equivalent version of AstraZeneca's Nexium, a therapy for dyspepsia, peptic ulcer disease, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

Data from IMS Health shows that sales of Nexium have been estimated at around 60 million pounds a year, with Ranbaxy's version of the tablet-based drug available in 20 mg and 40 mg dosages.

The drug has now been made available in pharmacies, retail outlets and wholesale stores with immediate effect.

Debashis Dasgupta, regional director for Ranbaxy Europe, said: "We are committed to bringing high quality, affordable medicines for the benefit of patients and healthcare systems worldwide and in Europe."

Last week, the company announced that it will be allying with its parent company Daiichi Sankyo to undertake a social contribution initiative in areas such as India and Cameroon, which will involve the provision of mobile healthcare field clinics.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800720767-ADNFCR
