BVA calls for greater awareness of Seasonal Canine Illness
The British Veterinary Association (BVA) is calling on UK vets to have a greater awareness of Seasonal Canine Illness (SCI).
It is a mystery illness that afflicted a number of dogs during the autumns of 2009 and 2010.
The BVA revealed there were cases of SCI reported in Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, East Anglia and Warwickshire over the last two years and it is therefore important for practitioners and dog owners – in these areas in particular – to be aware of the illness.
Harvey Locke, president of the organisation, said: "The BVA is drawing members' attention to this research gathering and awareness campaign so that they can warn clients."
The symptoms of SCI include severe vomiting, diarrhoea, shaking and trembling and a high temperature, with a small proportion of animals actually dying as a result.
Meanwhile, the BVA has applauded efforts by the Welsh government to improve dog welfare and to tackle issues such as puppy farming.
Mr Locke noted the drive to put in place legislation to outlaw this cruel practice is something that should be supported by all.
