Government commits to value-based pricing system for NHS
The government has reaffirmed its commitment to creating a value-based pricing system for the NHS, following the conclusion of a consultation period.
In a written ministerial statement, it was confirmed that patients, clinicians, the NHS and the pharmaceutical industry will all have input on the development of this model, which aims to improve patient access to innovative medicines.
Health secretary Andrew Lansley expressed gratitude to those that contributed views during the consultation, adding that he also expects the new system to encourage the medical research sector.
According to the minister, making these changes is vital to the government's aim of ensuring value for money for the NHS and improving outcomes for patients.
He added: "[Doctors] must be able to focus on what matters most – achieving the best health outcomes for their patient, not debating the price of a drug."
Earlier this week, the government announced that a number of NHS services are to be opened up for external providers in the next year as it seeks to improve the level of choice on offer to patients.
