ABPI welcomes appointment of life sciences business adviser

The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) has joined other professional organisations in welcoming the government's appointment of a new life sciences business adviser.
Chris Brinsmead, who will work alongside universities and science minister David Willetts and health minister Lord Howe, was handed the role earlier this week.
Currently chairman of AstraZeneca UK, Mr Brinsmead was president of the ABPI until earlier this year.
A joint statement was released by the ABPI, the Association of British Healthcare Industries, the BioIndustry Association and the British In Vitro Diagnostic Association in support of his appointment.
"By helping the government, NHS, academia and industry to work together, Chris can play a key role in helping the UK maintain its comparative advantage," the trade associations commented.
In December last year, Mr Brinsmead was selected by then prime minister Gordon Brown as a business ambassador with a remit to promote the UK life sciences industry overseas.
