Alcon launches new intraocular lens for cataract patients
Alcon has launched a new intraocular lens which is designed to provide improved vision and spectacle independence for cataract patients with astigmatism.
The company has introduced the CE Mark-accredited AcrySof IQ ReSTOR Multifocal Toric intraocular lens at the 2010 European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons annual meeting and is gradually introducing the product in non-US territories throughout 2010.
According to the manufacturer, the new lens combines the AcrySof IQ ReSTOR's multifocal performance with the astigmatism correction benefits of the AcrySof Toric lens.
This means that patients who undergo cataract surgery will be able to manage astigmatism without the need for any further procedures.
Kevin Buehler, Alcon's president and chief executive officer, said: "I believe it will expand the advanced technology intraocular lens market."
Earlier this month, Alcon announced that Novartis has become the company's majority shareholder after completing a deal to buy out the stake previously held by Nestle.
