Biogen Idec survey demonstrates lifestyle impact of MS

Biogen Idec has published a new study which highlights the negative impact multiple sclerosis (MS) has on the working lives of sufferers.

The pharmaceutical company has sponsored a survey of 430 patients from six nations, including the UK, revealing that 64 per cent have lost earnings as a direct result of MS-related mobility problems.

Although a majority stated that their employers have been supportive, more than a third have been forced to take time off due to their impaired mobility, while 72 per cent said such issues were having a “significant impact” on their ability to work.

Professor Hans-Peter Hartung, chairman of the department of neurology at Heinrich-Heine University, said this showed the importance of developing treatments to manage the physical and mental problems associated with MS.

He added: “The results of this survey reinforce our understanding that the loss of mobility is a leading concern for those diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.”

Earlier this month, Biogen Idec published its financial results for the most recent fiscal quarter, reporting double-digit year-on-year sales growth thanks to products such as Tysabri.
